The University City Symphony Orchestra will have a special concert on Sunday, November 20, as a tribute and memorial to Norman Goldberg, who helped found the orchestra fifty years ago. This concert will be at B’nai El Congregation, 11411 North 40 Drive, 63131, at 3:00 PM. As usual this concert is free and open to all.

The program includes an orchestra arrangement by Norman Goldberg of the organ piece, Prelude in C minor by J. S. Bach. Silvian Iticovici, violinist from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, will play Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor. Two of our cellists, Fariga Drayton and Jake Brookman, will be featured in Vivaldi’s Double Concerto for Two Cellos. The program ends with Gabriel Faure’s lovely Pavanne.

Great picnic in September

We had beautiful weather and a great group of neighbors for our picnic on Sept. 11. Hundreds of residents came out, visited, met new friends, shared food, heard great music by the Cosmic Cowboys and enjoyed the terrific microbrews and food. We’d like to thank the team of volunteers who organized all the effort to ensure it came off smoothly, including the master grillers, grill and table set-up and take down, button design and manufacturing chief, music procurement, and all the other efforts that took place under the direction of Nan Rochberg. A note about the beer: It was provided by neighbor David Wolfe, co-founder of microbrewery Urban Chestnut (www.urbanchestnut.com) located at 3229 Washington. We can say firsthand that his microbrews are great. Stop by his place and try for yourself.

If you lost a pretty plastic white platter with red and blue flowers, it can be found at Linda Locke’s house – 863-7550.

The Heights is now on Facebook

We’ve created a Facebook page for those of you who like to communicate online. Please “Like” our new page: University Heights Subdivision No. 1 and start posting updates, questions, photos of the picnic and other neighborhood events, and more. We have a beautiful neighborhood so post photos of the seasons, our events, your kids at Halloween – as well as comments, questions and ideas. If you have any photos from the annual events such as the picnic, Luminaria or progressive dinner events. We’re all figuring this out together, so let us know if you have any suggestions to better connect.

From the trustees:

A note about the leaves: The City picks up leaves from the curb sometime during the weeks of Oct. 31 – Nov 4 and Nov. 28 - Dec. 2. Please rake your leaves into the curbs before Monday on those weeks, but no sooner. Here’s why: We have old, cranky street drains. When it rains come, all those leaves go into the sewers, which then clog and flood the streets. Please do rake them into the street until the weekend before the pickup. Pile them on your tree lawn, in a corner, anywhere but in the street.

Another thing to be aware of is that when you park a car with a hot muffler system on a pile of dry leaves, you could ignite the pile — a very good reason not to have leaves in the streets! The good news is that the City also will pick up for free (no sticker) any plant materials, including leaves in paper bags from Oct. 15 until Dec. 31.

Winter – and snow – are around the corner: When it snows, please park off the street so we can plow the streets. If you can’t, try to move your car after the first plowing has been done, so Chris can replow the place where you were parked, rather than just plow you in again.

Street Resurfacing: The Trustees have signed a contract to resurface parts of Cornell and Radcliffe and patch water damage on Trinity and Princeton over the next few months. Say goodbye to the Olympic pool-sized pothole at the intersection of the two streets. We’ll check for missing pets and cars before filling the hole. Residents of the immediate area may be asked to move their cars off the street so the heavy equipment can get through. The Trustees are considering the best way to manage maintenance so we don’t end up with a huge bill but spread the expense out over a number of years. Watch for details at the annual meeting in February 2012.

October

Halloween

Get ready for a great night in the Heights. There is a resurgence of (adorable) young children in the neighborhood (as we saw at the annual picnic) so get ready for crowds at your door on from 6 – 8 pm on Monday, Oct. 31. Turn your porch lights on if you want costumed visitors. By the way, if you are new to St. Louis we have a tradition where kids come with a Halloween joke to earn their candy.

We will also again host a Great Pumpkin contest so do your best creative work on a pumpkin and secrets judges will circulate throughout the Heights to recognize great pumpkins. If you’d like to volunteer to be a judge, please contact nrochberg@gmail.com.

Leaf pickup begins Oct. 31

November

7 PM, Tuesday Nov. 8: U Heights Neighborhood Association meeting (everyone welcome), home of Jackie Grosklos, 700 Yale.

December

Luminaria and Progressive Dinner Sunday, Dec. 11

In December the Heights organizes two events that help you share holiday spirit with the neighbors you know and to get to know new friends, as well.

The neighborhood Luminaria display will be Sunday, Dec. 11. We urge neighbors to put lighted candles in bags on their lawns. To make it easy the Association will sell candles, bags and sand. Watch for details. In the evening stroll the neighborhood and enjoy hundreds of lights. For questions please contact nrochberg@gmail.com.

Progressive Dinner Party (Will you consider hosting some neighbors?)

Each year over 100 neighbors enjoy soup and salad at local homes, and then all come together for a party. The evening is one part potluck, one part holiday cheer, and one part mixing it up with new people. You’ll visit three homes during the evening, and bring a dish to one. Organizers will assign you to bring something to share. Kids are welcome for the first two parts. The dessert part is adults only since it’s bedtime for the kids.

Here’s how the evening flows:

5:30–6:30 Cocktails and appetizers (we need six to eight homes)

6:45–7:45 Soup and salad (we need eight to ten homes)

8 – 9 Dessert (we need one BIG house) (Dessert is for adults only)

Even though it is still warm out, we need to start planning. First, mark you calendar, since December gets busy. Then, if you want to attend the dinner party, please email Nan Rochberg (nrochberg@gmail.com) and let her know how many people from your home want to attend, and whether you can host a small group in your home and how many people you can accommodate. Participants will get the evening’s house assignments closer to the event. Hosts will be informed of the names of attendees in December.

The earlier you sign up the easier it will be to host this event. If you’d like to join the planning committee, please let Nan know. We’re looking for new ideas to keep this event lively.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Dear New Neighbor,

Welcome to University Heights! This page of useful information about your neighborhood is one of the many services of the University Heights Association. The Association is a voluntary organization of families who are interested in making their neighborhood their home. Membership is open to all residents of University Heights Subdivision Number 1. With your membership in the Association, you have input into the development of your neighborhood and you contribute to the strength of your community.

The Association publishes “Fence Talk”, a newsletter to keep you informed of activities in and around University Heights. Fence Talk is distributed to all homes in the subdivision. A social highlight of the community is the annual picnic sponsored by the Association in the fall. In December, we celebrate the Winter Solstice with a luminaria display coordinated by the Association. In April, the Association holds its annual meeting for the election of board members and general discussion of matters of interest and concern to residents. Ten monthly board meetings are held at the homes of various board members. Notice of the time and place of these meetings is posted at the entrance to our subdivision. As a member of the Association, you are extended a standing invitation to attend these meetings and to share your interests and ideas with your neighbors.

When you purchased your home in University Heights, you probably learned of the Subdivision Trustees. The Trustees were created by the trust indenture of the subdivision and are charged by that document with the responsibility of maintaining the private streets and character of the subdivision in accordance with the provision of the Trust Agreement. The annual Trustee’s Assessment is authorized by this trust indenture as a means of producing revenue to maintain streets and for other services provided by the Trustees. The Board of Trustees, consisting of three persons, is the legal mechanism for maintaining University Heights as a private subdivision.

The University Heights Association works with the Trustees to maintain the high quality of services in the neighborhood. The Association is financed by annual membership dues. No part of the Trustee assessment goes to the Association. We need your participation to continue to serve our community. Your interest and involvement in the University Heights Association is of benefit to you and your neighbors. A membership form is included in this packet. We hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

The University Heights Association
